Burd Ellen is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. The forthcoming release will be produced by Brighton based Agnes Haus and feature Paul Hamlyn alumnus Jayne Dent (Me Lost Me), and Scottish composer and vocalist Rylan Gleave (All Men Unto Me, Ashenspire). Hailed as “the Merseyside Morricone” by Uncut, Luce Mawdsley’s dramatic Americana soundscapes refracted through a Northwestern English coastal lens find their fullest, most moving form yet on a record dedicated to Luce’s late mother. Six wordlessly poetic compositions for guitar, lap steel, strings, horns and percussion, made in the shadow of grief and a search for solace and meaning. Originally from Formby, Merseyside and now based in Liverpool, Luce first started making music as a percussionist in school, forging an early love for the soundtracks of Western movies and television shows through whipping a chair with a belt to the theme tune from Rawhide. Upon picking up the guitar, they began to find their principle and most potent vessel of expression – first with the prog band Cavalier Song, then as part of experimental duo Mésange together with violinist Agathe Max. Experiences each which not only helped open Luce’s mind to music making in all its limitless possibilities and forms, but also “changed my life, how I felt in my own body, how I could feel,” they reflect, “all of which had an impact on me later coming out as nonbinary”. Luce Mawdsley’s first al...

The John Hackett Band embodies the spirit of progressive rock. From John’s pastoral flute textures, through the funky interplay between drummer Duncan Parsons and bassist Jeremy Richardson to the intricacies of Nick Fletcher’s lead guitar the group embrace pop, rock, jazz, classical, funk and all stops in-between, from the tenderest of ballads to hair-raising instrumental workouts! John Hackett has been a much-loved and admired figure in the progressive rock scene since the mid-70’s; best-known for his flute work with his brother, former Genesis guitarist, Steve Hackett on albums such as Voyage of The Acolyte, Please Don’t Touch and Spectral Mornings alongside his own solo albums Checking Out Of London, Another Life and The Piper Plays His Tune. * * * Dorie Jackson and her band are a dynamic, multi-generational collective performing original songs from two solo albums and selected tracks from three Kaprekar’s Constant records. Dorie’s live band includes her father, legendary sax player with Van der...

As those who have been fortunate enough to catch them in full flight will testify, a Jaywalkers show is an exhilarating experience. UK-based they may be but many from the other side of the Atlantic have complimented them on their particularly stylish delivery of this virtuosic and rich brand of Americana, Bluegrass & Country. These three outstanding musicians have developed a tight bond, demonstrated through their well-crafted, tasteful arrangements and ability to bounce ideas around the stage. The combination of powerhouse bass, flame-fingered mandolin, blistering fiddle and three-part harmony pack a punch as fiery as Jay’s lead vocals and delivers a rich sound that far exceeds what you’d expect from an acoustic trio. Mandolin maestro Mike Giverin is also the chief songwriter, and the band’s originals cover themes including the travails of the travelling musician, saving the planet and even tales of being stranded halfway up a mountain. All of which stand proudly alongside their clever covers, foot-stomping bluegrass tunes and superb interpretations of old country classics. In Jay Bradberry, the band has a truly sensational lead singer and fiddle player, and double bassis...
