Cafe No9, Sheffield

About this event

An evening with Bryde at Cafe No9 (the second of two back to back shows) is on Sunday 25 October 2026 at Cafe No9, Sheffield, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £16.50, including the booking fee.

Bryde aka Sarah Howells, is a woman and an electric guitar, playing fierce and fragile songs. Swaying from vulnerable to uncompromising within one verse and chorus, Bryde’s music is honest and furiously authentic. Fans have compared the music to acts as varied as Stevie Nicks, The Cranberries, Jeff Buckley, Lucy Dacus and even Taylor Swift. Intrigued by psychology and the inner workings of relationships Bryde’s songs hold close a defiant and life-affirming quality. Described as being about “entangling and unravelling” they move from tender and delicate, to tough and unforgiving. Bryde established her ethereal indie-rock sound early on, working with producers such as Jolyon Thomas ( Royal Blood) and Bill Ryder-Jones (Saint Saviour) Radio support reflected this coming from the likes of Huw Stephens on Radio 1, 6music, playlist on BBC Radio Wales. Over the course of three albums Bryde has opened for Rufus Wainwright, played Green Man and Latitude festivals, sold-out several London headliners, and toured Europe and the US. Debut album Like an Island, mixed by Catherine Marks (Boy Genius, Alanis Morrisette) Third album Still, released in July 2021 was nominated for the Welsh Mus...

An evening with Pavey Ark at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Pavey Ark are a cinematic indie-folk band from East Yorkshire Atmospheric vocals, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful orchestral-folk sound that evades immediate comparison. Upon further listening, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves – from the laid back ’60s and ’70s folk of Jackson C. Frank and Love, through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Known for their sublime live shows, Pavey Ark played SXSW Texas in 2025, the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage 2022 and closed Cambridge Folk Festival (Stage 3) in 2023. Huge achievement for an independent act. Pavey Ark’s debut album, Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received excellent reviews from UNCUT, Record Collector, Folk Radio and BBC Radio 6 Music airplay. It was chosen by the BBC as one of their picks for National Album Day in 2022. Their second album, More Time, More Speed, was released in November 2025. The album was mixed by LA based producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Andrew Bird, Teskey Brothers). The band also worked with composer and producer Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) who led the live string quartet stu...

An evening with Paul Armfield at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Paul Armfield is a singer, songwriter, bookseller and lifelong lover of words and songs. Based on the Isle of Wight, he has spent much of his life moving between music and books — a combination that perhaps explains the literary quality of his own songwriting and his fascination with the great storytellers of popular music. With a strong nod to classic English and American songwriters, his songs also draw on the European chanson tradition, with Jacques Brel a particular influence. He has a rare ability to make a song feel like a short story: intimate, observant, sometimes funny and often quietly heartbreaking. Paul has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, building a devoted following along the way. He is equally at home performing his own songs or reinterpreting the work of other writers, bringing the same curiosity and affection to both. His music has attracted some impressive admirers. Guy Garvey, Chris Difford amongst them, with Caitlin Moran describing his music 'As toasty and lovely as Christmas morning' and Mark Radcliffe heaping praise on his 2020 album Domestic: 'I love this so much - sensitive, melodic, hea...

African Head Charge: Open Air Show

The Fox and Firkin · London

African Head Charge is a pioneering dub and experimental percussion project founded in 1981 by percussionist and sonic visionary Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah. Formed in the UK but rooted in deep Jamaican and West African rhythmic traditions, the group became a cornerstone of the post-punk dub movement through its long-standing collaboration with producer Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound. Blending Nyabinghi drumming, reggae basslines, industrial textures and avant-garde studio experimentation, African Head Charge developed a distinctive, immersive sound that bridges ritual percussion and radical studio alchemy. Their early albums, including My Life in a Hole in the Ground and Environmental Studies, helped define the outer edges of dub in the 1980s, influencing generations of producers and experimental musicians. Across four decades, African Head Charge has remained an evolving collective centred around Bonjo’s hypnotic percussion, continuing to tour internationally and release critically acclaimed recordings that fuse ancestral rhythm with forward-thinking sonic exploration.
