About this event

George Boomsma is on Sunday 11 April 2027 at Kitchen Garden Cafe, Birmingham, with doors at 19:30. Tickets start at £8.80, including the booking fee.

George has built a steady following throughout the UK and beyond with his delicate but dynamic solo acoustic performances and has recently been making waves on the festival circuit, showcasing his full band. He has previously been championed by the likes of Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 and Cerys Matthews on BBC Radio 6. George’s 2026 festival appearances include Beardy Folk Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Cottingham Folk Festival and Deep Dale Folk Festival. While George’s music may be subconsciously informed by the ridings of Yorkshire and the folk tradition so prevalent in the area, his songwriting comes from a deeply personal place. His rich vocals and confident lyrical style are reflected in his storytelling, while his guitar work often echoes Nick Drake in approach. Organic instrumentation with a folk-rock influence reminiscent of classic Crosby, Stills & Nash and Jeff Buckley is evident. Traditional folk signatures and themes run throughout, blending country motifs and klezmer modes, with the bed-rock pocket of rhythm and blues. George has currently released five studio albums, two live albums and a compilation album of older material, all available on his Bandcamp pa...

Margaret Glaspy

Kitchen Garden Cafe · Birmingham

Californian singer / songwriter Margaret Glaspy boasts a diverse of musical background from competitive fiddle to marching band trombone. But with influences ranging from Joni Mitchell to Elliott Smith, she focuses her talents in fiercely raw, guitar-driven pop songs. Originally from the Northern California town of Red Bluff, Glaspy began writing songs at age 15 and quickly developed a style marked by raw sensitivity and razor-sharp insight. She began her solo career with the self-released Homeschool EP in July 2012. After signing to ATO Records in 2015, she released a 7-inch in early 2016 featuring “You and I” and “Somebody to Anybody” - songs that would later appear on her debut full-length Emotions and Math, a bold and bracing album that introduced her as a major new voice in indie rock. Coming off the back of her superb debut, Glaspy’s second album, Devotion, was released in March 2020, followed by Echo the Diamond in 2023 which was hailed by Uncut as “songs that glint like shards of glass yet brim with love, grief, courage, existential doubt and all the stuff that makes us human”. Her latest release, I Am Both, brings Glaspy’s disarmingly direct vocals and eloq...

Maddie Morris: Songs and Stories Tour

Kitchen Garden Cafe · Birmingham

What are the stories you thought you’d never tell? Join BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner Maddie Morris, described by Jim Moray as “leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters” on their autumn tour for an intimate and thought-provoking live experience. Maddie’s music explores how personal narratives in song can hold deep political importance. Folk songs have always told stories, but Maddie makes their mark by turning storytelling into action, creating work that is both deeply personal and quietly transformative. In this new show, Maddie invites you on a journey through stories of their life, while opening space for you to explore your own. Blending folk traditions and protest song with their perspective as a queer autistic person, this show examines identity, gender, disability, survival, and joy in community with warmth, humour, and honesty. This is more than a gig. Through optional interactive zines filled with playful doodles and reflective prompts, audience members can engage with the themes in their own way, contributing (if they wish) to a larger collaborative piece. A hopeful and generous storyteller, Maddie creates a welcoming and inclusive space...

A Different Thread

Kitchen Garden Cafe · Birmingham

“One road is ending, another road begins, come on let’s do it over again” (A Different Thread). Some things are just meant to be. Alicia Best (US) and Robert Jackson (UK) met while busking on the cobbled streets of Ireland and discovered both a musical and personal harmony that was serendipitous. In the decade since forming A Different Thread, Best and Jackson have taken their act on the road, touring over a dozen countries, supporting artists such as Milk Carton Kids and Jody Stephens (Big Star), and garnering critical praise from the likes of Folk Radio UK, which hailed the duo as “warm, deep songwriters that have drank from the well of 20th century tradition”. Their new album, Over Again (out May 1st 2026), was written during a period of transition, marked by their arrival stateside and a solar eclipse. Recording began in their tiny home studio, continued in Sylvan Esso's Betty's (The Mountain Goats, Watchhouse), and finished at Alma Vale Studio (Phantom Limb/Yola, Elles Bailey) in the UK. Their sound is transcontinental, blending Jackson's British folk rock background with Best's North Carolina-bred alt-country melodies. Informed by their life experiences (navigating...
