Budapest Cafe Orchestra

Arts · Calstock

In 2009 Christian Garrick established the refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired Budapest Café Orchestra (BCO) with the intention to present a broad range of music from all over the world in the most entertaining and fun way. BCO perform all their music from memory. Combined their trademark wit and charm, audiences are left tingling with warmth, delight and amazement. BCO are one of the very busiest acoustic groups for me today playing an average of 75 shows per annum. Since their inception they have recorded one album every year and in January 2025 made their 16th waxing Goulash Supernova. BCO are frequent guests to BBC Radio 3’s In Tune.

Hannah Snyed

Arts · Calstock

A selkie woman comes ashore to dance under moonlight and finds herself caught in the arms of a sailor. Captivated by love, she chooses to stay, surrendering her bond with the ocean for the promise of family life. But what does it really mean to stay? As the years pass, she is tethered to a growing child, weighed down by domestic routine, and slowly estranged from her own wild self. Where once she swam vast oceans, she now migrates between the washing machine, the oven, and the school gate - an unwitting tradwife. Torn between loyalty and longing, depression and quiet rage, our selkie must reckon with the cost of staying and the near-impossibility of leaving. Hilarious, heartfelt and darkly intimate, The Selkie Who Stayed reshapes the classic Selkie myth for the age of consent. The night will open with Tales of Freyja – a collection of stories of the fierce Norse Goddess.

Two Idiots & An Absent Friend

The Kingston Barn · Canterbury

Folk in the Barn - Presents 'The Tea Cosy Sessions' 2027 Doors 2.30pm for 3pm start Tickets £18 online £22 on the door £9 under 25s Two Idiots & An Absent Friend An Affectionate Tribute To The Great Les Barker By Keith Donnelly & John Watterson Les Barker - 1947 - 2023 The best and funniest Poet Laureate we never had. Les Barker was the folk world's well-kept secret on three continents. Outside its confines the general public were blissfully unaware of his talent for side-splittingly hilarious originals such as "Dachshunds with Erections Can't Climb Stairs' or 'Spot of the Antarctic' or 'Have You Got any News of the Iceberg?' (An alternative to the Titanic story from a polar bear's point of view.) Is it possible to be silly and a genius? Les Barker proved that it was. The Financial Times praised his work as “a blend of Edward Lear nonsense, Stanley Unwin wordplay, the surreal inconsequentiality of Reeves and Mortimer and the demonic robustness of Stanley Holloway monologues.” Les's long-time friends, Keith Donnelly and John Watterson, each well loved performers in their own right, are bringing his poetry to a wider audience. Keith Donnelly and Les Barker used to share a stag...
