During an October 1977 appearance on the BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test, singer John Otway leaped across the stage, missed his footing, and fell off a stack of amplifiers directly onto his crotch. The Song: Otway and his musical partner, Wild Willy Barrett, were performing their single "Really Free" live on national television. The Fall: During a burst of manic energy, Otway tried a dangerous stage leap, crashed down into the equipment stack, and absorbed the entire impact of the fall with his most sensitive body parts. The Reaction: Wild Willy Barrett famously continued playing the guitar without even turning around to check on his injured bandmate Millions of viewers watched the painful accident live. Chart Success: The hilarious and chaotic moment turned into free publicity, helping push their single "Really Free" into the UK charts. A Long Career: Otway embraced his status as a comical underdog and built a massive, loyal cult following that lasts to this day.

Richard Shindell

Community Centre · Cromer

Richard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant, crossing thresholds, that informs his illumination of the human experience through narrative song. Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked in the streets of Paris, opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs), and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Elvis Costello). Originally from New York, now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires, his most recent release, Careless, offered an ambitious, luxurious, full-length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio, allowing the time and latitude to explore, experiment, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. While his signature acoustic guitar style is used to good effect, Careless also found Shindell plugging in more. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. R...
