About this event

Ma Polaine's Great Decline is on Saturday 28 November 2026 at Green Note, London, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £16.50, including the booking fee.

Ma Polaine’s Great Decline are an award-winning band praised by MOJO Magazine for their unique blend of pop, folk, blues, and Americana, embarking on an exciting year following the February release of their fifth studio album, Monster Swan. This album is a return to the grittier, blues side of Ma Polaine, and whilst that influence is evident, the final album still carries their usual “hard to pigeon-hole” hallmark. “Japanese Knotweed” flies that flag most strongly, the somewhat unhinged story line backed by a similarly unhinged arrangement. “Gasoline Can” and “Told You Lately” hold the most blues about them, albeit from different camps of the genre. With airplay on BBC 6 and BBC Radio 2, and the support of Cerys Matthews, the band's genre-defying charm unfolds through songs that explore the intricacies of human connections, weaving tales of light and dark with uplifting melodies and heartfelt storytelling. Their recent live album release drew this comparison from Fatea magazine: “a cocktail that is one part Beth Gibbons from Portishead, a measure of Holiday edge and one part Rockabilly growl”. Beth’s songwriting roots trace back to her childhood in Cornwall,...

A Different Thread

Green Note · London

Some things are just meant to be. Alicia Best (US) and Robert Jackson (UK) met while busking on the cobbled streets of Ireland and discovered both a musical and personal harmony that was serendipitous. In the decade since forming A Different Thread, Best and Jackson have taken their act on the road, touring over a dozen countries, supporting artists such as Milk Carton Kids and Jody Stephens (Big Star), and garnering critical praise from the likes of Folk Radio UK, which hailed the duo as “warm, deep songwriters that have drank from the well of 20th century tradition.” Their sound is transcontinental, blending Jackson's British folk rock background with Best's North Carolina-bred alt-country melodies. Informed by their life experiences (navigating visas, vanlife, love across oceans) and liberal commentary on both environmental and social justice topics. While inspired by artists like Gillian Welch, The Avett Brothers, and John Prine, A Different Thread maintain a distinct sound that is all their own.
