About this event

Martin Simpson is on Sunday 9 May 2027 at Cabbage Patch Pub, Twickenham, with doors at 19:45. Tickets start at £19.80, including the booking fee.

Martin Simpson needs little introduction to anyone interested in acoustic music. Unquestionably one of the genre’s most revered musicians, he is equally at home playing English traditional folk, American folk and blues and his own compositions. He is universally acclaimed as a fingerstyle guitarist and slide player and is a fine banjo-picker to boot. In the 18 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, he was nominated 32 times, 13 of those as Musician of the Year, winning the accolade twice. Martin’s latest album, Some Kind of Jubilee, was released in September 2026. After more than half a century as a professional musician, the album bears witness to an artist at the very top of his game. He travels the length and breadth of the UK and beyond, giving rapt audiences passion, sorrow, love, beauty, tragedy and majesty through his playing, and TwickFolk is delighted to welcome him back once again for what promises to be a remarkable and intimate solo performance. When Martin last played for us in 2024, the evening was sold out weeks in advance - early booking advised.

Johnny Campbell

Cabbage Patch Pub · Twickenham

Johnny Campbell's work delves deep into folk song and story. His 2020 album, From Hull & Halifax & Hell (2020) took him to the Faroe Islands, where he recorded a live album on the island of Nolsoy. Since musical instruments hadn't arrived on the islands until the 19th century, this was perhaps the first time English traditional songs had been recorded on the islands. The album earned him album of the week with blues and roots radio and reviews with British folk press. Since March 2020, Campbell hasn't relented, releasing three singles, "Hard Times Of Old England", "Winter Hill Trespass" and "A Right to Roam". The former receiving play on Ian Lynch's (Lankum) Fire Draw Near podcast, while "Winter Hill Trespass" gained national press in Country Walking Magazine and The Guardian. "A Right to Roam" (2022) is a collaboration with Commoners Choir and Skelmanthorpe Brass Band and received the accolade of One of the Best Folk Songs of 2022 chosen by Tradfolk. 2024 saw Campbell release True North, an album of Northern English traditional songs recorded on their respective county summits, garnering press from Country Walking Magazine, Folk on Foot and BBC Radio 4 Open Country. The Andrew Collins Trio

Green Note · London

Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s burgeoning acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he's certainly been a contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including a popular collision of folk, jazz, bluegrass, celtic, and classical. As Collins gathers up innumerable JUNO nominations (5) and Canadian Folk Music Awards (7) won by his various ensembles, he’s zeroing in on the work he does with Trio-mates: fellow string guru Adam Shier, whose versatility shines through on guitar, mandolin, and vocals, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals. Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins and Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping...
