King No-One

Portland Arms · Cambridge

Doors 7 The Portland 8 - 8.30 King No-One 9 A sharp jolt of northern electricity, King No-One have quietly but assuredly become one of the UK's most exhilarating bands on the rise. Formed in the underground scene of York, they cut their teeth busking on chilly city pavements. Relentless touring and a string of infectious singles have won them loyal fans across the country, while their open embrace of individuality and social consciousness has set them apart on the live circuit. Bringing together glistening guitar riffs, punchy rhythms, and poetic narratives, their sound is both urgent and heartfelt. Vocalist and lyricist Zach Lount, never shy of raw honesty, channels his lived experience into a performance that is as revealing as it is relatable. Alongside him guitar hero Joe Martin throws impossible shapes and bassist Rob Gration shows he is a cult rock star in the making. King No-One don’t just introduce themselves, they throw open the doors to their world. They insist you walk on in. Price includes a 50p venue levy

Personal Trainer

Portland Arms · Cambridge

Doors 5 The Earwurms 6 - 6.30 Personal Trainer 7 There's this funny Dutch phrase that goes "mijn ei kwijt kunnen", which quite clumsily translates to "unloading my egg"; it more or less means having an environment or activity where all your feelings, creativity and energy can unshackle as you see fit. For the past 10 years, Willem Smit's eggs found their baskets within Personal Trainer, the restlessly creative Dutch indie rock stalwarts who have gradually risen up from Amsterdam's grassroots scenes to touring the world as part of the roster of distinguished record label Bella Union. One of Smit's bigger decisions with the recording of their new album "Human Assholes" was to make the acoustic guitar the starting point. And even more importantly, pen the songs in a physical room with the rest of the band instead of cutting and pasting stuff behind a screen. Three years of non-stop touring brought Personal Trainer to a freeing realization: no song is ever final, and no show is ever the last. "I think this is where a large part of the band's spirit comes from. We don't have to handle things with kid gloves, we don't have to frantically search for our sound. As a result, the show was al...

Chloe Slater is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter on the rise, carving her path in the realm of independent music. Born and raised in Bournemouth, she has been writing songs since she was 13 years old. After moving to Manchester for University, she found her voice in the effervescent open mic scene and has since been collaborating closely with writer/producer Jack Shute. Her recent debut EP, 'You Can’t Put A Price On Fun', encapsulates a grungy indie vibe, blending Chloe's distinctive style with meaningful lyricism. The EP explores themes of youth, identity, and the complexities of modern society, offering a vivid glimpse into Chloe's introspective world. Standout tracks like 'Price On Fun' resonate with wit and poignancy, delivering sharp commentary on contemporary challenges. ‘Nothing Shines On This Island’ presents a youthful critique of British politics with its gritty production and thought-provoking lyrics, while '24 Hours' features a powerful alt-pop chorus that resonates with today's younger generation. Ceitidh Mac

Green Note · London

Ceitidh Mac (pronounced “Katie”, spelled the Gaelic way – think ceilidh with a T) is a Welsh-born, Tyneside-based alternative cellist/singer whose sound is original, absorbing & full of soul. Folk in her subtle observations of people & politics, jazz in her attention to groove & not sticking to the rules of songwriting. Ceitidh Mac makes cello/singing feel like its own genre. Think Arthur Russell who paved the way for cello/singing, Aldous Harding in the beauty of leaving the listener space to find their own meaning in the songs, think Joni Mitchell, alt.folk heroes This is the Kit, jazz political commentator Alabaster dePlume. People who carve their own sound world. Growing up in rural Pembrokeshire before moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Ceitidh has worked with Sam Grant (Richard Dawson, Pigsx7) on all her recordings to date. They have built an exciting foundation to continue with a debut record.
