The Great Northern Railway Tavern, London

About this event

The Cosimo Matassa Project is on Friday 9 July 2027 at The Great Northern Railway Tavern, London, with doors at 20:00. Tickets start at £22, including the booking fee.

The Cosimo Matassa Project are a London-based collective of musicians united by a passion for 50s rhythm 'n' blues, and a love for the artists who passed through Cosimo Matassa’s studios. This man made musical magic in his New Orleans recording studio 75 years ago and became one of the most important figures in the history of rock 'n' roll, guiding to stardom Fats Domino, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Dr John, Allen Toussaint, Lloyd Price, Big Joe Turner and many more. He created the New Orleans sound - heavy on piano, bass and horns, copied by many and still hugely influential in popular music today. Now, in a brilliant revival of the glorious music of that time, we present The Cosimo Matassa Project, the brainchild of Dai Price (leader of those long-time Kalamazoo favourites, Dai and the Ramblers) and piano maestro Alan Dunn. Bass man Dai leads on vocals and has assembled a crack team of session players : Al "Dente" Dunn (he's worked with Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright III and Bob Geldof), tenor sax man Damian Hind (Van Morrison, Jerry Dammers, Allen Toussaint), trumpeter Dave Priseman (Imelda May, Jeff Beck, Jools Holland orchestra) and drummer Jonathan Lee (James Hunter b...

Honey & The Bear

The Great Northern Railway Tavern · London

Honey & the Bear have been a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in recent years. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures, and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song, they have been enchanting audiences up and down the country with tales of Suffolk folklore, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature. The multi-instrumentalist, husband and wife team comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar, bass, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar, ukulele, bass, banjo, mandolin & percussion), are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion), Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) and Archie Churchill-Moss (diatonic button accordion) who feature on all three Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK and most recently, the duo sang live on the BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme in December 2025. They are currently working on their next studio album which is due for release in Ap...

The London Bluegrass Band

The Great Northern Railway Tavern · London

From the small but thriving Bluegrass scene in London, the London Bluegrass Band emerged in 2021 from its roots in sessions and jams across the city. The collective, dedicated to showcasing and fostering the Bluegrass scene in the capital, is made from a diverse, international group of musicians who love Bluegrass old and new, and love sharing it! This line-up includes Jack Baker on mandolin and vocals, Matt Kendall on guitar and vocals, Chris Lord on banjo and Pete Thomas on double bass. Jack Baker is the UK's foremost Monroe-style mandolin picker and the band's undisputed expert when it comes to Bluegrass history. In 2015, he won a scholarship to attend the Monroe Mandolin Camp in Nashville and outside of the London Bluegrass Band he plays with his band, The Vanguards, another well-known band on the European Bluegrass scene. Jack is a regular at London Bluegrass sessions and is the closest thing you can get to Bill Monroe this side of the pond. Originally from Canada and having spent many years in the States, Matt Kendall finally landed in the heart of London. Talent like his doesn't go unnoticed for long and he soon became a fixture on the London Bluegrass scene, with his virtuo...

Michael Messer & Chaz Jankel's Dance of Life

The Great Northern Railway Tavern · London

This new four-piece band sounds fantastic. The music has a blues heart but with African, Caribbean, Rock’n’Roll and other grooves in the mix too. It’s a great lineup of musicians with such a wealth of experience and a cool sounding warmth. Their music rocks! Michael Messer, vocals and slide guitar. Johnny Cash was a fan of Michael Messer’s music and wrote the liner notes for his album “Rhythm Oil”, a rare honour shared only with Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson. Throughout his career, Michael’s music has remained individual and contemporary. Michael’s reputation as an innovator and master of slide guitar are well known. This is some of the best slide guitar playing you’ll ever see, on any stage in the world. Chaz Jankel, guitar and backing vocals. Chaz co-wrote many hit songs with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, including, “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll”, “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”, “Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3” and “Clever Trevor”. Chaz also wrote “Ai No Corrida” for Quincy Jones, and has written film scores that include, “D.O.A”, “The Rachel Papers”, “Making Mr Right” and “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”, which earned him a B...

Boo Hewerdine

The Great Northern Railway Tavern · London

Acclaimed Ivor Novello Award nominated English singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine’s album “Swimming in Mercury” (Reveal Records) gives us a personal insight as he takes us on that journey back in time. It’s a trip furnished with a glisten and a glint in his eye as he applies style and shapes to his autobiographical memories. Hewerdine revisits and recreates music in a manner that, put simply, a band starting out just couldn’t afford. In his own words “The new album was recorded in the spirit of the first four track recording I ever did… but instead of a chunky cassette deck we were able to use Chris Pepper’s Cambridge studio. It was an incredibly enjoyable and creative way to work. Often I would write a song in the morning and by the end of the day we would have another track done”. As a recording artist, Boo’s first tentative steps came with the band The Great Divide before the formation of his much-loved eighties group The Bible and a career that subsequently bloomed such that he is now in constant demand as a musician, songwriter, producer, teacher and live concert performer. In the past, Boo has toured and worked with Brit Award-winning, former Fairground Attra...
