A ROSE between TWO THORNS

blods · Bexhill

Two - shall we say ... 'seasoned'...musicians still at the top of their game who are not short of anecdotes and cheery banter - an all-engaging romp that proves sophisticated music doesn't have to be performed in a strait jacket. But now joined by a fresh new face on the jazz scene (and bringing the average age of the ensemble down considerably) JEMIMA BOWLER. A truly engaging personality and a major talent. Early days in her career but as well as being an exceptional vocalist she has a masters degree in music! She has also directed one or two plays and toured America; and you'll also find her later this year singing a lead role in Mike Hatchard's musical THE MAYOR of CASTERBRIDGE (new edition, at the Rye Festival). Jazz Breakfasts are something of a tradition on the South Coast with a long history. Various people have tried to copy the format but the original still reigns supreme! Come along and enjoy this inspirational concert.

Amy Winehouse by Lucy Randell

Boisdale of Canary Wharf · London

“It’s rare you see such an effortless talent. Lucy is charismatic and cool through and through.” – Mathew Bridgeman, Promoter Lucy Randell approaches Amy Winehouse’s catalogue with a deep respect for its musical complexity. She emphasizes timing, phrasing and tonal contrast, the way Winehouse would land a word just behind the beat or hang a note into silence, rather than surface imitation. Lucy rejects mimicry; she interprets the songs through her own jazz and soul sensibility. Her career includes features with session groups and appearances around the UK and Australia, and she has performed at venues like Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café and KOKO, stages Amy herself frequented. In a Camden Market event, Lucy articulated her method: “To sing Amy Winehouse you have to recognise that rhythm and tonal texture, and her timing. You really have to listen to how she lands her syllables.” Camden New Journal Expect a set drawn from Back to Black and Frank, delivered with Lucy’s own instrumentation and arrangements. Highlights often include “Valerie,” “Tears Dry On Their Own,” “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Love Is a Losing Game”. She yields space for the band...
