Still Life

Assembly Rooms · Presteigne

Still Life is a meditation in memoir and poetry contemplating the many aspects of loss which come when we love others. Carol Caffrey's tender narrative is the central strand. She experienced multiple bereavements when her four siblings - two brothers, two sisters - died within a few years of each other. Liz Lefroy has woven her poetry around this narrative, creating space for pause and reflection; and, for this November performance, Liz and Carol have chosen to include poems by Wilfred Owen. "Still life is a haunting performance: two women with their beautiful voices in a fascinating interweaving of their deeply moving poetry of loss and pain." Deb Alma, The Emergency Poet This event is produced in collaboration with Wings of Change and there will be a discussion and sharing on loss after the main event.

Janice Burns & Jon Doran

Assembly Rooms · Presteigne

Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an award-winning Scottish and English duo who came together after discovering a shared love of traditional music. Their songs tell vivid stories about the nature of life and our place in the world. Burns and Doran’s ‘clever and uncluttered musical storytelling’ (Songlines****) comes alive through close vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin, bouzouki and guitar. Their arrangements have a spellbinding presence and an understated energy that transports songs from the pages of books and manuscripts into the imagination of the listener. With their relaxed and personable approach to performance, Burns and Doran are renowned for the warmth of their connection with audiences. From Stage 2 at Cambridge Folk Festival, to Celtic Connections, Edinburgh Tradfest and Cecil Sharp House, the duo are highly sought after across the UK and beyond. They’ve performed in top venues across Europe, including Tivoli Vredenburg (Utrecht), Le Trianon (Paris), and Islington Assembly Hall (London) whilst on a support tour with pagan folk outfit, FAUN. LUKE WRIGHT presents YES

Falmouth The Tolmen Centre · Constantine

Luke Wright has become an institution at The Tolmen Centre and his almost yearly shows always attract a loyal audience – not least because he’s such a brilliant performer of the spoken word – be it it his heartfelt and sometimes polemical poems, or, usually after the interval, laugh-out-loud comedy. His new show ‘YES’ comes with the following description and a couple of reviews. "Luke Wright used to think he had the answers. Now he's not so sure. For twenty-five years, Fringe First winner Luke Wright has been writing poems that wrestle with the world around him. In this new show, he discovers that certainty is rarely as useful as he once thought. As children grow up, heroes become more complicated and old certainties begin to wobble, Wright finds himself looking again: at the country he lives in, the people he loves, and even those he thought he'd already made his mind up about. Part poetry, part stand-up Yes. is about changing your mind without losing your convictions – and staying open in an increasingly entrenched world. Luke Wright used to think he had the answers. Now he’s not so sure. Part poetry, part stand-up this new show explores what it means to change your...
