About this event

Uphill Game is on Wednesday 9 December 2026 at Arts Centre, Ashburton, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £8.80, including the booking fee.

Uphill Game is an acoustic contemporary jazz quartet based in Bristol, UK. It plays open, dynamic, driving, delicate, exploratory, groove- and melody-focused music, inspired by the likes of the William Parker Quartet but with its own distinctive collective voice. Currently one of the UK’s best-kept jazz secrets, the band was delighted to release its first album last spring, recorded live in the sumptuous acoustic of St George’s Bristol. The band is led by double-bassist & composer Riaan Vosloo. Riaan is a founding member of Nostalgia 77, and has worked with Gregory Porter, Jamie Cullum, and many more. Drummer Matt Stockham Brown leads his own project 6161, won a Montreux Jazz Festival talent award in 2019 and has played with the likes of Massive Attack, Rodriguez (Searching For Sugarman), and Cosmo Sheldrake. Tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie and flugelhornist Pete Judge are the horn section of BBC Jazz Award winners Get The Blessing, and established composers and band-leaders in their own right. The Brothers Gillespie

Arts Centre · Ashburton

“When The Brothers Gillespie sing, a portal opens. Seeing them perform for the first time felt like I was reminded who I really was…the thread of their ethereal voices weaving a spell around the room. They sing with an ancient wisdom that is entirely for us, now — nothing feels more present. Their beautiful music will open your heart” Johnny Flynn (actor and musician) The songs of Northumbrian folk alchemists The Brothers Gillespie (James and Sam Gillespie) are animated by lyrical poetry, fluid fingerstyle guitar, multi-instrumental musicianship and “the glorious tones of their blood harmony” (Sam Lee). Theirs is a music of encounter, of lark song and crow call, ash leaves and hidden ways. It is rooted in the earth and arises most strongly for them when they are out walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments. Bringing together visionary mythopoetics with a radical spirit, the brothers tread an older path whilst singing with fierce tenderness to the present time in its grief and luminosity. Their live performances are known for a rare intimacy and the spontaneous ways they weave tales around the songs and invite audiences into the heart of the music. In...

The Linton Duo presents Beau Soir

Arts Centre · Ashburton

Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata for violin and keyboard no.3 in E major, BWV 1016 Lili Boulanger Nocturne and Cortège D'un matin de printemps Claude Debussy Violin Sonata in G minor L 140 for violin and piano Amy Beach Romance César Franck Violin Sonata in A Major This concert takes us from one of the most exquisitely beautiful pieces of Bach to the world of the French Impressionists at the point their music enters the avant garde. Lili Boulanger accomplished much in her short life and her salon pieces are some of the last compositions in her hand before she was overtaken with illness and death. Her impulsive D'un Matin du Printemps is deceptively simple and shares many characteristics with the mercurial violin sonata by Debussy. Amy Beach's rich Romance leads us to .one of the finest violin sonatas ever written: César Franck navigates the heights of musical drama and searing intensity in this wedding gift for Ysaye and despite the notoriously demanding piano part, the players must ride the storm of intense musical dialogue with true virtuosity. Watch Philippa and Alfred playing together here on Vimeo The Linton Duo brings together British violinist Philippa Mo and Hong Kong-born p...
