About this event

When We Were Punks is on Friday 3 September 2027 at Community Centre, Cromer, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £13.20, including the booking fee.

When in 1977 punk rock arrived in a small town, nothing was ever quite the same again. In this one-man show, North Walsham singer-songwriter Andrew Brammer takes a trip back to the days when he and his schoolmates discovered an explosive new sound, an anarchic new attitude and a whole new way of looking at the world. Alongside blistering songs, hear tales of friendships and rivalries, riotous gigs, outrageous characters and bizarre escapades, all happening amidst the glorious chaos of the late 1970s. Discover how Andrew and his mates bought cheap guitars, learned three (and eventually more) chords, and formed The Snarling Ferrets, battling for punk supremacy against their fierce local rivals, Ingrid & The Severed Hydra, and other rebellious outfits with not-so-cool names. Featuring Andrew’s own unique and quirky urban folk-punk songs, along with plenty of timeless stripped-back punk classics and obscure gems, When We Were Punks is a nostalgic, uplifting and often hilarious celebration of the music and friendships that shaped a generation. Whether you were there back then or simply wish you had been, this is an unforgettable evening of songs and stories from an era when anything s...

Richard Shindell

Community Centre · Cromer

Richard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant, crossing thresholds, that informs his illumination of the human experience through narrative song. Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked in the streets of Paris, opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs), and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Elvis Costello). Originally from New York, now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires, his most recent release, Careless, offered an ambitious, luxurious, full-length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio, allowing the time and latitude to explore, experiment, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. While his signature acoustic guitar style is used to good effect, Careless also found Shindell plugging in more. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. R...
