Shaun Matthew Conductor Wissam Boustany Flute GEORGE BUTTERWORTH A Shropshire Lad Rhapsody for Orchestra GERALD FINZI The Fall of the Leaf, Op.20 DAVID HEATH Ascencion Concerto for Flute & Orchestra FLORENCE PRICE Symphony No.3 in C minor Welcome to the opening concert of the season. We open with George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad Rhapsody, inspired by A. E. Housman’s poetry collection of the same name. Drawing upon themes from Butterworth’s own songs, particularly Loveliest of Trees, the work is pastoral, elegiac, and deeply poignant. Written before the First World War, it later became inseparably associated with the tragedy of that conflict following Butterworth’s death on the Somme at just 31 years of age. Gerald Finzi’s The Fall of the Leaf (Elegy), Op. 20, continues the programme’s atmosphere of reflection and lyricism. Evoking the beauty of the English countryside, the work combines warmth and serenity with quiet melancholy. Left incomplete at Finzi’s death and later completed by Howard Ferguson, it remains one of his most intimate and heartfelt orchestral works. We are proud to present the world première of Ascension, a Concerto...

Shaun Matthew Conductor Finn Anderson-Hendra Cello JAMES LLOYD Symphony No.1, Norwegian DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No.1 in Eb major, Op.134 LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No.1 in C major, Op.21 Tonight, we open our concert with James Lloyd’s Norwegian Symphony. A member of the orchestra’s horn section, Lloyd composed the symphony for his wife, Imogen Lloyd, the SSO’s principal cellist, following a holiday to Norway. Inspired by the majesty and atmosphere of the Nordic landscape, the work captures both the grandeur and solitude of Norway’s natural world with vivid imagination and emotional warmth. We are delighted to welcome Finn Anderson-Hendra the second winner of the SSO/YWMF Concerto Competition, for Dmitri Shostakovich’s gripping Cello Concerto No. 1. Written for the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the concerto combines sardonic wit, relentless energy, and profound introspection. Its driving rhythms, haunting lyricism, and fiercely demanding solo writing create a work of immense emotional power. We conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, a work that announced the arrival of a bold new symphonic vo...
