About this event

An evening with Ma Polaine's Great Decline at Cafe No9 is on Thursday 11 February 2027 at Cafe No9, Sheffield, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £16.50, including the booking fee.

Ma Polaine’s Great Decline are an award-winning band praised by MOJO Magazine for their unique blend of pop, folk, blues, and Americana. Ma Polaine’s music resonates as both comfortably familiar and refreshingly innovative, creating a truly engaging experience. With airplay on BBC 6 and BBC Radio 2, and the support of Cerys Matthews, the band's genre-defying charm unfolds through songs that explore the intricacies of human connections, weaving tales of light and dark with uplifting melodies and heartfelt storytelling. Based in Somerset, UK, Ma Polaine have a sound that is their own. Beth and Clinton both grew up with jazz, blues and soul, using those influences and a love for individuality to write songs that are simultaneously dark and light, featuring Beth’s effortlessly distinctive vocals and evocative lyrics, coupled with Clinton’s understated guitar style. Their recent live album release drew this comparison from Fatea magazine: “a cocktail that is one part Beth Gibbons from Portishead, a measure of Holiday edge and one part Rockabilly growl” ********************************************************************************** Please note this ticket price DOES includ...

An evening with Pavey Ark at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Pavey Ark are a cinematic indie-folk band from East Yorkshire Atmospheric vocals, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful orchestral-folk sound that evades immediate comparison. Upon further listening, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves – from the laid back ’60s and ’70s folk of Jackson C. Frank and Love, through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Known for their sublime live shows, Pavey Ark played SXSW Texas in 2025, the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage 2022 and closed Cambridge Folk Festival (Stage 3) in 2023. Huge achievement for an independent act. Pavey Ark’s debut album, Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received excellent reviews from UNCUT, Record Collector, Folk Radio and BBC Radio 6 Music airplay. It was chosen by the BBC as one of their picks for National Album Day in 2022. Their second album, More Time, More Speed, was released in November 2025. The album was mixed by LA based producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Andrew Bird, Teskey Brothers). The band also worked with composer and producer Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) who led the live string quartet stu...

An evening with Paul Armfield at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Paul Armfield is a singer, songwriter, bookseller and lifelong lover of words and songs. Based on the Isle of Wight, he has spent much of his life moving between music and books — a combination that perhaps explains the literary quality of his own songwriting and his fascination with the great storytellers of popular music. With a strong nod to classic English and American songwriters, his songs also draw on the European chanson tradition, with Jacques Brel a particular influence. He has a rare ability to make a song feel like a short story: intimate, observant, sometimes funny and often quietly heartbreaking. Paul has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, building a devoted following along the way. He is equally at home performing his own songs or reinterpreting the work of other writers, bringing the same curiosity and affection to both. His music has attracted some impressive admirers. Guy Garvey, Chris Difford amongst them, with Caitlin Moran describing his music 'As toasty and lovely as Christmas morning' and Mark Radcliffe heaping praise on his 2020 album Domestic: 'I love this so much - sensitive, melodic, hea...

Hannah Scott live at Rosslyn Court

Rosslyn Court · Margate

Hannah Scott draws much of the inspiration for her music from her affinity with Italy. A year living and working on an olive press in rural Tuscany in her late teens provided the backdrop to her early work and she has found her musical home with creative partner, writer-producer and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Della Casa, who she met in London but may well have met years earlier when passing through the train station in Italy he was working in! When they began making music together, they realised they had an amazing connection, despite very different backgrounds: Stefano had a troubled early adult life, while Hannah was lucky to have a happy upbringing. Hannah has had her own difficulties following the diagnosis of Axial SpA, a form of arthritis which causes severe joint pain and fatigue. Both artists firmly believe that their musical collaboration has provided an outlet to support each other through difficult times. Their music has been heard in hit TV series, Grey’s Anatomy, and has been played regularly on the BBC with releases supported by Dermot O’Leary and Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 and Tom Robinson on 6 Music. They’ve also been featured by MOJO, The Guardian and Clash...
