About this event

The Brothers Gillespie is on Sunday 1 November 2026 at Arts Centre, Ashburton, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £8.80, including the booking fee.

The songs of Northumbrian folk alchemists The Brothers Gillespie (James and Sam Gillespie) are animated by lyrical poetry, fluid fingerstyle guitar, multi-instrumental musicianship and “the glorious tones of their blood harmony” (Sam Lee). Theirs is a music of encounter, of lark song and crow call, ash leaves and hidden ways. It is rooted in the earth and arises most strongly for them when they are out walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments. Bringing together visionary mythopoetics with a radical spirit, the brothers tread an older path whilst singing with fierce tenderness to the present time in its grief and luminosity. Their live performances are known for a rare intimacy and the spontaneous ways they weave tales around the songs and invite audiences into the heart of the music. In 2026 the brothers have been busy touring and recording, for the release of their fourth studio album Kingfisher which was released on 10 October. Kingfisher is a collection of songs borne of deepening into the kingdom of life and its terrain of love, loss, grief and longing. These are songs dreamed into being on the banks of two Northern rivers, the Tweed and Tyne, and are suf...

Harbottle & Jonas, with Richard Trethewey and the Wild Goose Choir

Arts Centre · Ashburton

Having made their home on Dartmoor, Dave Harbottle and Freya Jonas have spent the past few years gathering songs, stories, melodies and fragments from the landscape around them. Inspired by ancient tors, wooded valleys, rivers, churches and the people and stories of Devon, From The Moor To The Sea brings traditional material into conversation with new songs reflecting their own experience of putting down roots and raising a family here. The album’s title was inspired by the extraordinary journey of the wild salmon, travelling downstream from the moor to the sea before eventually finding its way home again. That image of landscape, journey and return runs through the heart of the record. For this special launch concert, Harbottle & Jonas will be joined by Cornish fiddle player and Bard Richard Trethewey, alongside Freya’s Wild Goose Choir, bringing to life the voices, harmonies and community that have become part of the album itself. An evening of old songs, new songs and stories rooted in the place Harbottle & Jonas now call home. From the moor, to the sea, and home again. Not Only But Also The Blues: James Dixon and Russell Sinclair

Arts Centre · Ashburton

James Dixon “Melodic, soulful and simply beautiful” BBC Introducing “A soul brother....got his fingers in the mud” Seasick Steve With a sound that is both raw and intimate, he engages his audiences across the country with heartfelt lyrics, soulful vocals and a guitar style described as “red in tooth and claw” (Americana-UK) Heavily inspired by Chris Whitley, John Martyn, Kelly Joe Phelps, Neil Young, Nic Jones, Chris Wood and Ralph McTell. James has a deep respect and passion for the long traditions of his instruments and music. At the same time he is driven by a strong urge to challenge the ossified conventions that keep some of these traditions from new ears. This dance between the past and the present is what makes James’s heart beat when performing. Choosing to reject effects pedals altogether, he chooses from a quiver of instruments including a beloved custom made 6 string cigar-box guitar called “The Weight” (after the Band’s classic song); a National Style 0 resonator; 1950s Harmony Silvertone and his Bulwark Guild dreadnought acoustic; all in various traditional open tunings. Well known in the UK cigar-box scene, James has been collaborating with Dirtbox...
